I think it's often the "proving" think, like John said. People who are comfortable where they are at generally don't need to talk down to people.

The one SFF group I belong to keeps everyone at the same level of accountability, plus we have a really good moderator.

Occasionally I run into the odd sexist bully trying to rile the masses, but he rarely gets the reaction he's hoping for.

I really like what John Blackport said above, and this holds true for both sexes.

It's really disheartening, the "Reddit" attitude. It's like we've regressed to junior high.

What rude idiots. You're absolutely right to be offended by behaviour like that. Ironic that someone behaving like a troll would call you one for expressing your opinion! Now all we need is some daylight, and see who actually turns to stone...

Of course the most successful authors are less likely to engage in crap like this. They have less to prove.

The "internet" (by which I mean, I suppose, the internet communities like Reddit, and digital culture in general) seems to be renegotiating the status of women...and it doesn't feel like the negotiation is going all that well (if progressive = well in this instance). Seems to be part of the general e-rebellion against perceived authority - everything from copyright to the legitimacy of the state itself. The internet is acting like its consent is necessary to legitimize feminism, which is obviously problematic for feminists who feel the issue was settled before the internet even existed. In other words, it's no surprise that you are encountering this attitude on a constant basis, nor is it a surprise who the main speakers of the attitude tend to be.
